Project 365 - Day 4

Project 365 - Day 3

Last weekend Ali and I went to Saugatuck. It was a rainy Sunday so we spent it playing at The Art Barn. We painted pottery, made jewelry and unleashed our inner artist! The fired pottery arrived today. On the left is the piece in its pre-fired state. All the colors of glaze paint on in roughly the same color family. The fired piece makes me feel quite accomplished!

Project 365 - Day 2

Sometimes Sophie just knows when you need kisses.

"Auugh! I've been kissed by a dog! I have dog germs! Get some hot water! Get some disinfectant! Get some iodine!"
– Lucy Van Pelt in Peanuts

Project 365 - Day 1

I read about a photographic diary that sparked my imagination. Called Project 365, the idea is to take a photo a day and remember the simple things in life that tend to slip by. It's hard enough to remember the big events in life - let alone the small ones. Today is the beginning for me. I plan to print a copy of each photograph and make an album a year.

There was a complete lunar eclipse last night. To see in best you needed to live in the Western United States, but the full moon over the pines in the backyard was beautiful.

“See how nature - trees, flowers, grass - grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence...we need silence to be able to touch souls.” – Mother Teresa

This is Findlay

I live in Findlay, Ohio which has been added to the list of places across the United States that have been devastated by flooding in the last few weeks.

This is a snapshot of a home in my town. If you look closely you can see how high the water was in the brickwork on the front. If you are even more observant you will notice the high water marks in the middle of the curtains in the front window.

When I took this photo on Saturday morning it was raining. Again.

Prayer Scarves

I'm knitting a scarf for a woman named Amanda in Richmond, Virginia.

A college freshman at Western Kentucky University named Bonnie is knitting a scarf for me.

We are all part of the Ravelry Scarf Exchange! More than a hundred of us are knitting and exchanging scarves and other goodies - just for the fun of it.

It's hard to know what Amanda might like. I looked around her Ravelry pages and project pictures. I poked around her blog and read a little bit about her life. Then I started paging through books planning the scarf I'm going to knit for her.

As I was doing that I realized that this Scarf Exchange is a little bit like knitting a prayer shawl. I don't really know much about the person that will receive my creation. I don't know her dreams. I don't know her frustrations. Pretty much all I know is that the process of MY knitting will somehow brighten her day and make her feel like someone is caring for her - even if just in a small way.

When I used to knit prayer shawls I never knew who I was knitting them for. All I knew is that I hoped this little act of making knots with string on two pointy sticks made them feel comforted and cared for in the middle of some kind of life event. I'm not sure what kind of prayer I believe in right now. While I'm knitting for Amanda I will think positive thoughts and visualize peace and tranquility surrounding her.

Maybe Bonnie will do the same for me.
